Contentment in a World of Distractions

Kia ora koutou, warm greetings, and ngā mihi nui

Well, I don’t know about you, but have you ever been watching a favourite TV programme, and just as it reaches its peak, an ad appears? It’s an understatement to say I get really annoyed! Hahaha!

The truth is, the world constantly seeks our attention with promises of happiness. “You need this product to feel good,” “You need this investment to bring peace in retirement,” or “You need this to stand out.” And so it goes.

The bible talks about contentment as one of the most difficult Christian virtues to attain. The Bible teaches us not only that we must be content, it teaches us that we can be content. The Lord will provide for our needs.

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”(Hebrew 13:5)

Paul writing from prison to the Christian community in Philippi, a city known for their generosity and support of his ministry says:

I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. (Philippians 4:11)

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

Contentment reminds us to trust God’s provision rather than the world’s promises. That truth has been especially real to Felicity and me over the past few years—and especially this Sunday, as we celebrate the third anniversary of our arrival here at St Peters.

Felicity and I want to thank you all so much for your love, support, and for warmly welcoming us into the church family. We’ve experienced so many blessings on this journey, and we’re excited to see what God has in store for St Peters in the years to come.
