Church Identity and Culture
Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings and Talofa lava!
On Saturday 1 November, I had the privilege of opening and closing the Pasifika Festival in the Bay 2025 at Ōtūmoetai College. It was a vibrant celebration filled with colour, rhythm, and community. Some of our own families and their aiga/whānau (see photos) took part in cultural performances each one a beautiful expression of identity through language, song, dance, and movement.
The aroma of delicious food, the brightness of traditional attire, and the joyful atmosphere all reminded me of how culture helps shape who we are and where we belong. Congratulations to our Pasifika families who now call Tauranga Moana home. Your presence, gifts, and heritage enrich not only our wider community but also our church family.
Cultural identity is a precious gift from God. It shapes us as individuals and strengthens us as a community. Each of our backgrounds, traditions, and experiences adds colour to the beautiful tapestry that makes up the body of Christ. The Bible reminds us that though we come from many places and stories, we are all one family under God’s love. This unity doesn’t erase our uniqueness, it celebrates it.
Author Carey Nieuwhof once said, “Church culture is how your church feels. It’s the atmosphere, vibe, or climate of your church experienced by members, staff, and visitors.” That’s a thought-provoking statement.
So, what would you say about our church culture?
When people come through our doors, do they sense the love, grace, and humility of Christ in our words, actions, and relationships?
Scripture offers us a guide for shaping this kind of Christ-like culture:
“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. “Ephesians 5:1–2.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
“Love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12, 17
At St Peter’s, our desire is to help each person live life to the full, the fullness that Christ offers (John 10:10).
Our mission is to grow people in God’s kingdom:
- people who are coming to believe in Him,
- people who are learning to follow Christ, and
- people who are giving their whole lives to God’s mission.
We want to be a place where people can find, follow, and know Jesus.
May our church culture always reflect the heart of Christ, a place where love is felt, diversity is celebrated, and everyone finds belonging in the family of God.
