Advent is Here

Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings and Talofa lava!

Advent is here, the sacred four-week season leading us toward Christmas. This year, we begin on Sunday 30 November and conclude on Sunday 21 December. Advent invites us to remember with gratitude the first coming of Jesus and to look forward with confidence to His promised second coming.

Throughout these four weeks, the Church reflects on the traditional Advent themes, and I warmly encourage you to enter into this season with a sense of joy and anticipation. Each Sunday before worship, we will light a candle representing the gifts Jesus brings into our world: Week 1 – Hope, Week 2 – Peace, Week 3 – Joy, and Week 4 – Love.

This week, we begin with the theme of HOPE.

Biblical hope is not wishful thinking; it is a secure assurance rooted in the character and promises of God. Hope steadies us during trials, strengthens us in seasons of uncertainty, and reminds us that God is faithfully at work in our lives. Here are Scriptures to dwell on as we meditate on hope this week:

Hope is rooted in God’s promises. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

Hope sustains us in difficult times. “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…” – Isaiah 40:31

Our hope is anchored in eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” – John 3:16

Hope is nurtured through prayer. “Do not be anxious about anything… but in every situation… present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6–7

As we journey through Advent, may we remember that hope is not passive—it is an intentional, daily choice to trust in God’s goodness, wisdom, and timing. May Christ, our Living Hope, renew your strength and fill your hearts with quiet confidence this week.
