When Sport and Faith collide
Well, the FIFA World Cup has finally begun. For soccer enthusiasts, there was both excitement and relief when our little nation of New Zealand managed a draw against Iran.
What a boiling point of emotions that match created. Beyond the football itself were the political tensions and world events that inevitably raise questions when sport and current affairs intersect.
The common saying is, “Sport is sport.” And perhaps there is some truth in that. The game still went on, players competed, and fans cheered.
Yet as Christians, we are reminded that our faith is not something we switch on and off depending on the situation. The gospel shapes how we view every part of life, including sport, politics, culture, and world events.
The writer of Hebrews encourages us:
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”(Hebrews 12:1–2)
Athletes train, sacrifice, and stay focused on the goal before them. In a similar way, we are called to keep our eyes fixed on Christ amid the competing voices, loyalties, and distractions of our world.
As we enjoy the excitement of the World Cup, perhaps it is worth asking: What race am I running? What is shaping my thinking and guiding my choices? While teams compete for a trophy that will eventually fade, we are called to pursue a prize that lasts forever.
May we enjoy the game, celebrate healthy competition, and remember that our ultimate goal is to faithfully run the race Christ has set before us.
Blessings
