Seasoned Branches

During my church pastoral visits, I’ve had the privilege of spending time with several followers of Jesus who are in their nineties. Their pace is slower, and they’re not as mobile as they once were, yet what stands out isn’t what they can no longer do but the quiet strength of their faith.

They still enjoy driving to the local shops, walking in the park, and giving thanks for God’s daily provision. They continue to read the Scriptures, expecting that God still has something new to teach them. Even as they adapt to a rapidly changing world of smartphones, computers and artificial intelligence, they do so with remarkable contentment, trusting the One who never changes.

Watching them reminded me of Jesus’ words in John 15: “I am the vine; you are the branches… If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” Jesus never says that fruitfulness depends on our age, our strength or how busy we are. It comes from remaining connected to Him.

Perhaps instead of thinking of ourselves as ageing branches, we should think of ourselves as seasoned branches. Seasoned branches have weathered many storms. They’ve experienced seasons of growth and pruning. They’ve learned to draw deeply from the life of the Vine. Their roots run deep because they’ve discovered that God’s faithfulness never fails.

The beautiful thing about seasoned branches is that they often bear the sweetest fruit. Their fruit may no longer be measured by activity but by wisdom, gentleness, prayer, encouragement and a quiet confidence in God’s faithfulness. They remind us that a life lived with Christ over many years becomes a blessing to everyone around them.

The passing years do not dimmish our usefulness to God.

Our world celebrates youth and productivity, but Jesus celebrates abiding. So whatever season of life you find yourself in, stay connected to Jesus the true Vine. As long as His life flows through us, we will continue to bear fruit that blesses others and brings glory to God.

Blessings
