A Walk Worth Waiting For

 “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” — Proverbs 22:3

Many of us have missed walking around our beautiful Mauao (Mount Maunganui). For many, it has been much more than a walking track. It has been a place to enjoy God’s magnificent creation, to pray, to reflect, to exercise, and to spend precious time with family and friends.

Since the track was closed following the tragic landslide that claimed lives, it is understandable that many are eager for it to reopen. We all look forward to the day when we can once again enjoy this special place.

Yet, as disappointing as the wait may be, I find myself grateful that the necessary health and safety checks are being carried out thoroughly. I would much rather wait a little longer and know that the track is safe than rush to reopen it and risk another tragedy. Every life is precious, and every precaution taken reflects the value we place on protecting one another.

The wisdom of Proverbs 22:3 speaks powerfully into this moment: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Waiting is not always easy, but sometimes it is the wisest and most loving response. Patience can be an expression of care—for ourselves, our families, and for our wider community.

So, while we may miss our familiar walk around Mauao, let us also give thanks for those working diligently behind the scenes to ensure the safety of everyone who will one day enjoy it again. Their careful work reminds us that protecting life is always worth the time it takes.

When the day comes that the track reopens, I believe we will walk with even greater appreciation, not only for the beauty of God’s creation but also for the gift of life itself.

Until then, may we continue to walk faithfully with Christ, trusting that some delays are not obstacles but expressions of wisdom, care, and God’s gracious protection. Some walks are simply worth waiting for.
