Advent Week 3 – Joy
Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings and Talofa lava!
This week we’re celebrating Joy, represented by the Shepherds’ Candle. It reminds us of the joy that came when Jesus entered the world, and the salvation He gifted us. It’s a joy we can experience in every season of life.
The Bible reminds us that joy is something we choose, growing out of a real, ongoing relationship with God.
God’s joy is His gift to us. It brings comfort, peace, and a deep contentment that isn’t shaken by what’s happening around us. Jesus told His disciples, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:11
The birth of Jesus is the source of our joy. Isaiah 35 gives us a beautiful picture of a future overflowing with hope and joy. And in Luke 2:10–14, when the angels announced His birth, it was “good news of great joy for all people.” As the Church, we join with all creation in celebrating and giving thanks. Psalm 118:24 reminds us: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
God’s joy lasts. It’s more than a feeling, it’s His promise of protection, His constant presence, and the secure future we have in Him. Revelation 21:4 points us toward the everlasting joy still to come:
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes… there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
What a hope. What a joy. Hallelujah!
As we move toward Christmas, may our hearts sing with joy. May our voices rise in celebration. And may everything we do bring glory to the God who fills us with joy that never fades.
Let’s rejoice this Christmas, Christ has come, and Christ is with us!
