Making the Most of our Abilities
Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings, church family!
This week, the Paralympics opened with a message of inclusion and positivity. Around 4,400 athletes are taking part in the events, including 25 Kiwis. The Paralympics is about human resilience and the determination of athletes who overcome various challenges to compete at such a high level. This caused me to reflect on how we make the most of our abilities and blessings, and the importance of using them wisely.
From a Christian perspective, this aligns with the biblical principle of stewardship. We are called to be grateful and to use our God-given talents, abilities, and opportunities to serve others and glorify God. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 10:31, reminds us, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Similarly, the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) encourages us to be faithful with the gifts we’ve been given, whether they be physical abilities, spiritual gifts, or any other form of talent or opportunity.
In our daily lives, this means not comparing ourselves to others, but rather focusing on what we have been entrusted with and how we can use it to make a positive impact. It’s about waking up each day with a sense of purpose and gratitude, ready to use our senses, bodies, and minds in service to God and others.
Folks, have a great week! Give thanks for what you have, and for those who are fathers, grandfathers or a father figure to someone, happy Father’s Day this Sunday!
