Our Identity as Followers of Jesus

Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings and Talofa lava!

A few weeks ago, our church hosted the Pacific Language Competition Final for secondary schools across the Bay of Plenty. Students of Samoan, Cook Island, Niuean, Tongan, Fijian, and Hawaiian heritage, along with their teachers and supporters, filled our church. The atmosphere was alive with language, music, and colour as students proudly wore their cultural attire.

It was a beautiful celebration of identity, based on language, culture, and community. As I watched, I was deeply moved. It reminded me that as people of faith, we also carry a distinct identity, not one defined by culture alone, but by our relationship with Christ.

We see similar expressions of identity in other settings too, such as sports matches when New Zealand faces other nations. Recently, the All Blacks and South Africa stirred divided loyalties in our congregation, some unsure who to support! Yet, this only strengthens the truth that, while we celebrate our birthplaces, when we are born again in Christ, our true identity is found in Him.

The Bible reminds us:

  • We are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27)
  • We are deeply valued and “worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:31)
  • We are created for good works (Ephesians 2:10)
  • We are called to live a holy life (2 Timothy 1:9)

In a world that often pressures us to define ourselves by what we do, where we’re from, or how we look, our faith tells us: You are God’s beloved. Your identity in Christ gives you purpose, dignity, and direction.

So, let’s walk confidently in that truth this week, speak kindly, act justly, and live boldly. Let your identity in Christ be the foundation for how you live, love, and lead in your family, workplace, and community. We are a people of purpose, called by name, and sent to shine.
