Our Saviour and Our Song

Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings and Talofa lava!

On Tuesday, Felicity and I had the joy of attending the Big Sing Secondary Schools Choral Festival at the Sir Howard Morrison Theatre in Rotorua. We were there to support our granddaughter, Micayla Jane Elika, who was singing with her school from Auckland.

What a heart-warming occasion! It was inspiring to see so many young people from all over New Zealand come together to share the beautiful gift of music. We were especially proud to see Tauranga Girls’ College among the 12 schools selected to perform.

As I listened to those young voices rise in song, I was reminded of how important singing is in our faith. The Bible is full of verses that call us to sing and praise God. Singing isn’t just about notes and melodies; it’s about the joy that overflows from our hearts as we worship our Creator.

Each Sunday morning, when we gather for worship, we are given that same opportunity: to sing with joy, to give thanks, and to proclaim God’s goodness through music.

Here are a few verses to encourage us:

“Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout to the rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1)

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music.” (Psalm 98:4)

“Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.” (Psalm 95:2)

So, as we step into this new week, let us carry a song in our hearts, not just on Sundays, but every day. Let our lives be a melody of faith, hope, and love. And when we come together again, may our singing reflect the deep joy we have in Jesus Christ, our Saviour and our Song.
