The Beauty of Winter and the Hope of Matariki

As we journey into the heart of winter, the landscape around us begins to change. The brilliant colours of autumn have faded, the mornings arrive later, the evenings grow longer, and many of the trees stand bare against the winter sky. At first glance, the season can seem quiet, even lifeless. Yet beneath the surface, creation is preparing for new life. Winter is not the end of the story; it is a season of rest, reflection, and renewal.

It is during this season that Aotearoa New Zealand celebrates Matariki, the Māori New Year. The rising of the Matariki star cluster before dawn signals the beginning of a new cycle. For generations, it has been a time to pause, remember those who have passed, give thanks for the blessings of the past year, celebrate the present with family and community, and look forward with hope to the future.

These themes resonate deeply with the Christian faith. As followers of Christ, we too are invited to remember God’s faithfulness, to give thanks for His blessings, to strengthen our relationships with one another, and to entrust the future into His hands.

The bare trees of winter remind us that God is often doing His deepest work beneath the surface. Though the branches appear empty, the roots continue to grow. Though we may experience seasons of waiting, God is preparing us for new life in His perfect time.

As the Psalmist declares:

“Those who trust in the Lord are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season.” (Psalm 1:3)

May this winter season, together with the celebration of Matariki, encourage us to pause, reflect, remember, give thanks, and renew our hope in the God who makes all things new. Just as the stars announce the beginning of another year, Christ, the Light of the World, reminds us that every new season is held securely in His loving hands.

Blessings
