Creation: A Gift to Receive, A Treasure to Steward

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

Imagine turning on your tap tomorrow morning, and nothing comes out. No water to drink, no water for your shower, no water to make your breakfast, no water to wash your hands, no water to swim in, and no rain to refresh the earth. Suddenly, something we hardly notice becomes something we deeply value. Water is a gift. And water is only one of the gifts we receive from creation every day. We breathe the air, eat food from the earth, enjoy the warmth of the sun, see the sky, hear the birds, walk among trees and enjoy the sea.

So much of what sustains us is simply given. The Bible begins with creation: ‘In the beginning God created…’ And Psalm 19 reminds us, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.’ Creation is speaking. Every day, creation points us beyond itself to the Creator. Perhaps this September, we can slow down enough to notice again, to see the beauty, goodness and generosity of God that surrounds us every day.

Creation is not something outside us; it is part of who we are. We are God’s creatures, living within God’s creation, receiving every day from what God has made. And with that gift comes responsibility. Genesis 1:26 speaks of humanity being entrusted with responsibility within creation; Genesis 2:15 reminds us that we are placed within it ‘to work it and take care of it’, and Leviticus 25:23 reminds us, ‘The land is mine.’

Creation belongs to God, and we are called to be faithful stewards of what He has entrusted to us. So, throughout September, I invite you to take a journey together looking, receiving, giving thanks, caring and ultimately asking what we will pass on to those who come after us. Receive the gift. Give thanks for the gift. Steward the gift. May we discover afresh that creation has been declaring God’s glory all along.
