The News Never Stops

Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings, church family!

I hope you all enjoyed the Anniversary Weekend holiday on Monday. Felicity and I took advantage of the beautiful weather, going for a bike ride along the Marine Parade pathway, followed by a refreshing swim. It was wonderful to see so many families making the most of the beach and all the activities along the foreshore.

As we rode, we talked about the many recent events happening both here in New Zealand and around the world, including the ongoing conflict in Israel. The news never stops—every day brings fresh headlines. This week alone, we’ve heard about speed limits returning to 100 km/h on certain rural roads, the release of four hostages and prisoners between Hamas and Israel, school staff shortages in primary and secondary education, and changes in government leadership.

Yet, amidst all the breaking news, there is one announcement that remains constant and unshakable—the good news of Jesus Christ. The Bible brings breaking news not just for believers, but for all people, regardless of faith or background.

God’s invitation is open to everyone: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

This is the greatest news of all! Unlike the headlines that fade with time, this message endures forever. Consider these powerful moments of divine “breaking news” from Scripture:

  • “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21)
  • “And suddenly there appeared with the angel a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favour rests!’” (Luke 2:13-14)
  • Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last. (Luke 23:46)
  • Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” (Luke 24:36)
  • And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

These moments remind us that the gospel is not just history—it is a living, breathing reality that continues to transform lives today. No matter what is happening in the world, God’s kingdom stands firm, and His call to us remains the same: to trust in Him, to walk in His ways, and to share His love with those around us.

See you on Sunday
