We Are in This Game Together

Kia ora koutou, and warm greetings and Talofa lava!

This week, we’ve had a relative staying with us as his son competes in the AIMS Games, and hasn’t Tauranga come alive with joy and excitement! Over 14,000 young people from more than 430 schools across Aotearoa and the Pacific have gathered for this Annual celebration of sport, friendship, and growth.

While these young athletes compete in various events, the heart of the AIMS Games goes beyond the scoreboard. It’s about meeting others, building relationships, learning teamwork, and celebrating the unique way each person is made.

This reflects a deep truth of our faith:

Each of us is made in the image of God with value, purpose, and the ability to love and connect (Genesis 1:27). Just as the athletes train and support one another, we too are part of a team – God’s family. We are not meant to walk through life alone. God invites us to journey together, supporting one another in love, faith, and service.

The “game of life” we live is not about winning over others, but about lifting one another up and using our gifts to bless those around us. It’s a team effort, and everyone has a role to play.

This week, let’s make it our ‘AIM’ to encourage someone. Maybe a family member, friend, co-worker, or even someone you don’t know well. Let them know they are seen, loved, and valued by God as 1 Thessalonians 5:11 reminds us:

Encourage one another and build each other up.”

And 1 Peter 4:10 adds:

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.”

When we serve others, we reflect the very heart of Jesus.

As the AIMS Games wind up today, we pray for safe traveling mercies for all those returning home, and as we continue in our own race, may we take heart from the author of Hebrews who reminds us:

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”Hebrews 12:1–2
